Elin H Wofford

Elin Haraldsdottir Wofford, age 89, of Lynchburg, passed away Friday, March 29, 2019 at Creekside Nursing Home in Murfreesboro, TN. Funeral Services are scheduled for 1 PM, Monday, April 8, at Lynchburg Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Lynchburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 PM on Monday at Lynchburg Funeral Home. She was born November 23, 1929 in Neskaupstadur, Iceland, a daughter of the late Haraldur Johannesson and Kristin Sveinsdottir of Iceland. Elin came to this country on a visit to Fort Myers, FL in 1947. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Searcy of Tallahassee and the former Florida Senator, Claude Pepper and wife, Mildred, looked after Elin while she was in Florida. Shortly thereafter she attended Florida State University. In 1952, she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. She was the President of Foreign Students club at FSU. In 1953, she graduated with her Master of Arts degree from Florida State University. In 1954, she began attending George Washington University Law School where she met her husband, Leon Daniel Wofford, Jr. They later married on September 10, 1955 in the Washington Cathedral, St. Mary’s Chapel, in Washington, D.C. where Mr. Claude Pepper gave her in marriage. She was employed with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development at the time. She became a citizen of the United States on October 07, 1957. After living in Washington D.C., Elin and her husband moved to Virginia, Alabama, and then finally settled in Mulberry, Tennessee. In Lynchburg, she worked as a Real Estate agent and owned several businesses, including Lynchburg Country Kitchen. Elin was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Leon Daniel Wofford, Jr.; two daughters, Sandra Lee Wofford and Kathryn “Kathy” Ann Wofford; and two brothers, Oli Andri Haraldsson and Hreinn Haraldsson. Elin is survived by one son and three daughters, Sonya (Whit) Henderson, Tina (John)Daniel, Dana (Tim) Green, and Danny Wofford; Twelve Grandchildren: Whitney (Kevin)Raque, Matt Henderson, Dillon Henderson, Ryan (Cinda) Daniel, Jordan Daniel, Lee (Nicole) Corder, Eric Corder, Holly Corder, Suzie (Brent) Thornton, Lee Rogers, Ross (Lindsey)Rogers, and Olivia Wofford; and 15 great grandchildren.
