Samuel Dowell Caldwell

Samuel Dowell Caldwell, age 68, of Fayetteville, TN passed this life on February 16, 2022. He was born on July 10, 1953, to the late John and Joyce Caldwell. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents Sam P. & Joni K. Cowley and Renzo Dowell & Sally B. Caldwell. “Sam” to those who knew him personally, was a dedicated employee, a knowledgeable teammate, a unique person at heart, a true friend, and Sam was undeniably a U.S. Marine to his core- Semper Fi (Always Faithful). Having completed his tour of duty serving his Country, Sam worked for a period of time for the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency. Afterwards, he began his career at Redstone Arsenal as a Security Guard. Having earned two educational degrees, he was soon selected to the Department of the Army Material Development and Readiness Command (DARCOM) Intern Program and completed a 2-year training program focused on Army Acquisition Logistics at Red River Army Depot, Texas. After graduation, he was permanently assigned back to the Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal. Sam worked as a Logistics Management Specialist the rest of his career primarily in the Targets Management Office. Beginning in March 1991, Sam oversaw operational functions of various aerial targets that were used to enhance Air Defense capabilities within the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, and many Allied Nations. These operations took place at many different sites around the world and required Sam to travel extensively. Sam took special pride in overseeing operations of the QUH-1 Huey helicopter. Sam retired August 1, 2009, having completed over 5,930 missions at 34 different live fire ranges in twelve different countries. Sam was awarded the Aviation and Missile Command’s “Commander’s Meritorious Service Award” and was presented with a special U.S. Flag that had flown over the U.S Capitol on 4 July 2009 in Washington D.C. in honor of Sam and his 30 years of service to the United States. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Diane Stewman Caldwell; brothers, Tony Caldwell, and Paul (Renee) Caldwell; mother-in-law Billie Stewman and father-in-law the late Charles Randy Stewman; brother-in-law Charles (Randie) Stewman; aunt Melba (Ben) Williams; cousins; nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Hughes and Avalon Hospice Staff. Sam will be remembered for his love of hunting, guns, and his dogs. In keeping with Sam’s wishes there will not be a service at this time.
